Instagram features a simple messaging service to let the users communicate privately and share their photos, videos and stuffs. But unfortunate for some, this feature is only available in official Instagram App for Android, iOS and Windows. But if you are like me, and prefers to access Instagram in desktop from browser, you probably have been disappointed to find out that this feature doesn't exist from desktop web users.

Also if you are even more like me, you might have used one of the popular unofficial desktop application called ID:dm. If you haven't, it is a desktop application that basically lets you access your Instagram messages from desktop. It is available for Windows, Linux and macOS. It has cool features like notifications and hiding "seen" mark. You can check it out here.

But this post is not about using any unofficial softwares, so how can we access Instagram Direct Messages from just a browser? The answer comes from a simple hack. Remember while browsing Instagram from mobile browsers, the messaging feature shows up? Yes, we are going to trick Instagram's website into assuming we are accessing their web page from a mobile browser and not from desktop.

At this point you might have understood all you need to do is change the browser user agent from developer options and a simple reload will bring up the messaging feature right away. For those who are unfamiliar, here's a step by step guide for Chrome users and Firefox users:

For Chrome Users

1. From the 3 dots menu, go to More Tools > Developer Options (Or Press Ctrl+Shift+I)

2. Click on Toggle Device Toolbar and Reload the page.

3. Voila, now you can see the messaging icon. You can change the screen size to your preferred size.

For Firefox Users

1. From Menu, go to Web Developer > Toggle Tools (Or Press Ctrl+Shift+I)

2. Now click on the Responsive View icon as shown below and Reload the page

3. And there's the messaging icon you were waiting for. Similarly, you can change screen size as you prefer.

If you find it useful, please share this to your friends and family. I'm pretty sure someone in your circle will find it useful too. :)
